The judicial branch of government is essential to good governance in a modern democracy. Furthermore, The American Anti-Corruption Institute (AACI) has established an independent and effective judiciary as a Principle of Fighting Corruption. When the judiciary in any country is sluggish, it is a bad omen and one of the most significant barriers to combating corruption. The corruption of the judge himself is one of the most serious forms of corruption in the judiciary. However, the reasons for judicial corruption are numerous and sometimes complex.
Kids for Cash Scandal
“As U.S. District Judge Christopher Conner wrote in court documents this week, former Pennsylvania judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan “orchestrated” the closing of juvenile facilities in 2002 in an effort to “make way” for new detention centers, the construction of which would see them both amassing financial benefits.” 1
Judiciary Corruption in Developing Countries
In general, the higher the level of corruption in the community, the higher the level of corruption in developing countries’ judiciaries. When a society is corrupted, the effects affect everyone. Judges are not angels, but rather humans. Some judges are corrupt, while others are not.
Corruption, according to The American Anti-Corruption Institute (AACI), has no statute of limitations. Judges who are corrupt should be held accountable.
