Today, Reuters reported that the”Mauritanian authorities have arrested former president Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, one of his lawyers said on Wednesday, amid an ongoing investigation into alleged high-level corruption during his time in office.” You will find more details when you click on the news below.
In most Arab and African countries, the head of state is not accountable for his acts, including corruption, while he is in office. Worse, they are not questioned about the sources of their wealth!
In most of these countries, the international community finances its annual budget deficits. Did the international community ask these countries how they spent this financial support in terms of grants and loans? The answer is no. They did not and they will never do.
Arresting the former Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz because of alleged corruption is excellent if it is based on facts and not on politics. If the Mauritanian authorities are serious in fighting corruption, we invite them to implement the Ten Principles of Fighting Corruption promulgated by The American Anti-Corruption Institute (AACI).
